Venture capital spending remains in deep slump
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Venture capital spending remained relatively dismal in the second quarter, putting the year on track for the lowest level of VC investing since before the dot-com boom.
According to the MoneyTree Report, released Tuesday, venture capitalists invested $3.7 billion during the second quarter. While up 15% from the first quarter -- which was the lowest period on record since early 2007 -- the second quarter's totals were less than half of the $7.56 billion raised in the same period last year.
VC firms completed 612 deals during the second quarter, up from the 603 deals in the first quarter, but well below the 1,059 deals in the same period last year.
"It's hard to predict whether this is a new normal or not," Ray Rothrock, a partner with VC firm Venrock, said in a conference call on Monday. "If the economy does not turn around, and if LPs [limited partners] do not feel encouraged by activity, VC firms will have to husband their cash."
So far this year, venture capitalists have spent a total of $6.87 billion, putting the year on track for its lowest annual haul since 1996, when only $10.8 billion were invested into businesses.
